Raissa Elongo may be a 25-year-old Congolese born woman that is based in Johannesburg but she is also a smart business woman that saw a gap in the hospitality market and decided to follow her passion into providing a service that a of people long for. Raissa owns a beautiful guesthouse Horses Neck Lodge in Lombardy East. Three years ago, Raissa was searching for accommodation and she couldn’t find a place that provided exactly what she needed. This experience opened her up to the reality of the need for affordable yet comfortable accommodation in her area. She started off by renting out one room on Airbnb and when people loved it, she decided to extend it to three rooms. This was the start of Horse’s Neck Lodge. Raissa says she was beyond passionate about the idea, but “being an entrepreneur has been the hardest thing I’ve ever done yet the most rewarding”.

One of the biggest challenges Raissa experiences as the owner of the lodge is trying to keep up with the standard of guests. Maintenance and renovation costs also add up quickly, which makes the balancing of the financial books, difficult.
When asked what her achievements were, she said that maintaining a steady growth despite having the odds stacked up against them in a tough economic climate. “We have a long way to go and we are ready to take on the journey”.
She says future plans include growing and expanding their brand and making a huge success of the guesthouse. They’ve extended to hosting events and meeting areas to hire which is “very exciting”, she expressed.
Raissa concludes by saying, “I encourage those who are interested in the hospitality industry to take time and do extensive research. The level of commitment can be very overwhelming to begin. It’s definitely one of those things you need to put your heart to. It’s not always glamorous and exciting. Get ready to work longer hours than the standard 9-5 job. Understand the financial side of the business and build a network of people you admire and seek advice from them. Remember that you’re in the business of making people happy, so you need to be a people person.”
